Links and quotes around the Size Zero phenomenon, jeans and beauty, thinspiration and anorexia as a lifestyle, peace to Ana Carolina Reston.

Gisele Bündchen: Fashion's credo less is more -- the road to anorexia --

The majority of women will look on in amusement, exasperated perhaps that the fashion industry still worships the thin physique so stridently but savvy to the fact that this elite clique has little to do with our reality.

However, for an increasingly vocal few, this warped aesthetic is affirmation that their pursuit of thinness is positive and life changing. The Pro-ana movement seeks to redefine our understanding of eating disorders through an affiliation of websites that embrace anorexia as a lifestyle choice.

Size Zero! --

Remember when women aspired to be a perfect size 10? Well, forget that notion because these days a size 10 is seen as positively obese -- at least in Hollywood.

A disturbing new phenomenon is heading across the Atlantic that deems the new ideal size an astonishing size zero -- that's a teensy UK size 4.

[...]

Yet spurred on by a growing legion of super-skinny celebs including reality show star Nicole Richie, Superman actress Kate Bosworth and our own "skinny icon" Victoria Beckham, size 0 is now touted not only as an attainable, but a must-get goal by dedicated followers of fashion.

The trend is being forged in Los Angeles, where "thin" has long equalled happy but where "size-zero envy" is the new buzz-phrase on people's lips.

"Negative" Sizing: The Size Zero Debate --

But how many of us know anyone with a waist smaller than 23 inches or a bust that is no larger than 31 inches? Apparently, anyone who shops at Marc Jacobs is a likely candidate.

They call them the Size 0 Girls and most weigh not much more --

The upscale meat packing district of lower Manhattan is where the beautiful people gather after dark. Tottering in their high heels over cobblestones come wave after wave of immaculately groomed young women, their tummies concave, their legs like toothpicks, and with waists so teeny-tiny they're optical illusions.

Holding up a Pair of Size Zero jeans...

... seemed to bring home to these women how hard and unhappy life must be as a female celebrity.

The Mindset: Anorexia and Thinspiration

Fat Independence: Be Perfect... Be Beautiful... Be You

Anorexia may be a harmful activity. We do not encourage this activity.

Here is a Pro Ana Webring with motivation and advice --

Make an ANA scrapbook with pics of skinny models. Write down all the reasons you want to lose weight. Keep track of everything you eat. Look at it daily for thinspiration.

The only freedom left is the freedom to starve.

Giving in to food shows weakness, be strong and you will be better than everyone else.

You aren't defeated when you lose, you're only defeated when you quit!

Do not give up on what you want most for what you want at the moment.

Nothing matters when I'm thin.

An imperfect body reflects an imperfect person.

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

I'm not starving myself. I'm perfecting my emptiness.

It's not deprivation, it's liberation.

Craving is only a feeling.

Thin is a skill.

What's in your fingers today is on your hips tomorrow.

Quod me nutrit, me destruit (What nourishes me also destroys me.)

What the scale says is the most important thing.

Being thin and not eating are signs of true willpower and success.

With Inspirational Art in many thin shapes and forms, the goals are set.

Cravings: Satisfy or Resist?

Give in to cravings or employ all the willpower it takes to suppress and eventually defeat the longing? Is it about indulging in the forbidden fruit or about replenishing the desperately needed fuel?

Desperately needed fuel.

Just in case... there are some healthy ways to lose the last pound of fat --

10 Diet Tips for Successful, Sustainable Fatloss and Long-Term Health Benefits

General dieting principles based on common -- yet often ignored -- sense.

The Secret Connection between Loosing Fat and Eating Healthily

Resolve to become more healthy and drop the fat automatically.

You may even want to try something like the Get Shredded Diet. Here is (almost) all it takes --

Your body weight in lbs x 10kcal

Here are two more and promising ways to become a size zero --

Try this one to firm and flatten your abs. Quickly shrink your waistline, lose body fat, eliminate low back pain and develop great abs. If this doesn't bring the results, Fat loss 4 idiots surely will.

Well, I am sure the discipline and initial willpower is yours already...

Pro-Ana

A 21-year-old Brazilian model died of anorexia...

... one day before she was scheduled to fly to Paris for a photo shoot, local media reported Wednesday.

Ana Carolina Reston was 1.74 meters (5.6 feet) tall and weighed 40 kilos (88 pounds) when she died on Tuesday.

Researchers in Scotland and Italy say dark chocolate has much better anti-oxidant properties.

This means that it can protect the heart and arteries from oxidative damage, similar to the rust that develops on metal over time.

Dark chocolate was found to boost blood antioxidant levels by nearly 20%.

However, there was no such effect when volunteers ate milk chocolate or drank milk with dark chocolate.

Here is what Erik Spiekermann has to say about the design of the world cup:

Everybody wants to own a design for an event as big as this, from the CEO to his wife to a whole chain of people going down. And there are way too many committees and meetings where changes are required by people who don't know what they're doing. In the end, after all the input, the common denominator in this case turned out to be very, very low.

[...]

It's a shame because when people come in from the outside world they think this is how German designers are and for me, it's personally embarrassing.

... as defined in Wikipedia:

Jet lag (aka "jetlag" or "jet-lag"), is a physiological condition which is a consequence of alterations to the circadian rhythm. Such alterations result from shift work, transmeridian travel, or altered day length. They are known as desynchronosis, dysrhythmia, dyschrony, jet lag, or jet syndrome. The condition is generally believed to be the result of disruption of the "light/dark" cycle that entrains the body's circadian rhythm. It can be exacerbated by environmental factors.

The Independent Traveler Travel Resources: Sleeping on Planes

How to Sleep on an Airplane

Sunglasses put jet lag in shade

British Airways - Jet Lag Advisor

Here is an example

... getting up at 6:00 am, sleeping well and traveling from Europe all the way to California; going back 9 hours.

Our recommendations

Day 1

Seek light between 10:00 am to 12(noon):30

Avoid light between 12(noon):30 to 15:00 pm

Day 2

Seek light between 22:00 pm to 0:30 am

Avoid light between 0:30 am to 3:00 am

Seeking light

The advisor has suggested the optimum time to expose yourself to light. Light is important because it is one of the primary cues that the body clock uses to maintain it’s link with the outside world.

When it comes to seeking light, any kind of light will do. Daylight is best, but if it’s not available, simply switching on a bedroom light is sufficient to help you minimise the effects of jet lag.

Avoiding light

Avoidance of light at certain times is also an important cue to the body clock to help you recover more swiftly from the effects of crossing time zones.

Avoiding light can be achieved by drawing the blinds or curtains in the room you are in, or wearing an eye mask. If there’s nothing else you can do, then simply wearing dark glasses will help.

Meals and exercise

In addition, adjusting your exercise and main meal times to your new time zone will help to synchronise your body clock sooner.

Just in case:

Matt Furey calls it Combat Conditioning:

When you look at the old Soviet wrestlers, or the Russian wrestlers of today, you will find that they have solid builds, but they don't look like bodybuilders or weight lifters. Their build is much different from the American wrestlers, as most Americans train with weights.

Now, my point in writing all of this is not to persuade people to stop using weights. I simply want people to know that the notion that calisthenics don't build strength is flat out false. I want people to know that you can get strong by following a routine of calisthenic and gymnastic movements. I want weight lifters to know that they can benefit from these exercises. And I want all of you to know that these exercises don't have to be done at a spa or health club. These exercises require no fancy equipment and can be done at home or in your hotel room when you're traveling. All you need is your own body, self-discipline and the willingness to adapt and improvise.

For example, Hindu Squats:

Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes pointing straight ahead.

Keep you back straight and lower your buttocks until your thighs are parallel to the floor.

As you lower your buttocks your hands are behind your legs, and they follow you toward the ground.

As you hit the parallel-to-the-ground position, you simultaneously raise your heels from the floor.

Push off your toes, raising your body to a standing position.

As you raise your body, your hands come in front of your body. They continue to rise until they are level with your chest.

Once you have reached the up-position, you pull your arms in toward your chest as if you are rowing a boat. Make tight fists with your hands and pull. Your elbows will be close to your body as you pull.

Inhale as you pull your arms in, exhale as you lower yourself.

Repeat without stopping for as many reps as possible. In the beginning, depending on your condition, you will be able to do 25-50. When you can do 100 without stopping, your conditioning level is improving.

When you can do 500-straight Hindu squats, you're making great progress.

… soon it became clear that the athlet’s muscles were the key to the new technology as individual groups of muscles are responsible for fast movement. As a result we could understand how we could complement the movements they make — by applying compression in key areas and enhancing their explosive power with Powerweb bands.

… follow the natural movements of the muscles and enhance the movements. TPU power bands embodied in the suit along key muscle groups contract and expand together with the muscles and thereby store energy when stretching and return energy when contracting back.

… the Powerweb bands link the legs with the power centre of the body, the abdominal muscles, and also with the upper body. On the one hand, through the interaction of all muscles, greater efficiency is achieved, while on the other hand athletes feel a support function which automatically helps them to maintain a more upright position.

A new generation of tech-savvy architects is bringing premium-quality, prefabricated housing to the masses.

Prefab just might be the perfect housing for an age of iPod playlists and TiVo preferences and one-click ordering, where on-demand customization is becoming the norm. Sure, something similar happens in new housing developments, but the main difference is that with modern prefabs you don’t have to live surrounded by serial replicas of your own home.

What about prefabricated, custom steel frame residences from Marmol Radziner Prefab:

Marmol Radziner Prefab homes are made from recycled steel and are completed in our factory with your choice of finishes, details, and appliances, many of them environmentally friendly. The homes are not kits or panelized systems; the full construction of your home takes place in the factory, and the finished house can be delivered and placed on your site in as little as 5 months from the time your order is placed. There are three floor plans available, each thoughtfully designed to complement the landscape. We also offer three installation options to meet your budget and site needs.

A pear wood handle with a fishtail end, a high maintenance, uniquely shaped carbon steel blade with fine edge-holding capabilities stamped with the crowned hand, a heraldic symbol of the town of its origin and a metal collar which locks the blade open — and closed.

You can tell it’s a classic when its very name Opinel has come to mean ”pocket knife“. The New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) calls it a masterpiece of design.

An Israeli company has recently tested one of the most shock-resistant materials known to man. Five times stronger than steel and at least twice as strong as any impact-resistant material currently in use as protective gear, the new nano-based material is on its way to becoming the armor of the future.

[…] a sample of the ApNano material was subjected to severe shocks generated by a steel projectile traveling at velocities of up to 1.5 km/second. The material withstood the shock pressures generated by the impacts of up to 250 tons per square centimeter. This is approximately equivalent to dropping four diesel locomotives onto an area the size of one’s fingernail. During the test the material proved to be so strong that after the impact the samples remained essentially identical compared to the original material.

Coffee? Be Your Own Coffee Maker

You’d have to grind and blend your own, roast it, you’ll need a coffee grinder and a coffee maker. You’ll want an espresso machine, an Italian espresso machine even…

The shorter the time between grinding the coffee beans and brewing the espresso, the better the taste:

Have you ever smelled freshly ground coffee? Or even a can of ground coffee when you first open it?

Isn’t it amazing?

The bad news is that every bit of that wonderful aroma is flavor that went into the air, instead of into your cup.

Once coffee is ground, it goes stale in just ten short minutes.

Does this mean to make good coffee you have to grind it yourself? You betcha. There is not one single thing you can do that will make more difference in your cup than grinding your own coffee.

We learn that excellent coffee is about the grind, the beans, time, water, and the proper brewing temperature.

The remarkable popularity of Filofax over the past decade has naturally led many people to believe it is a relatively new concept. Yet its origins go back as far as the First World War when an Englishman working in the USA, came across an American organising system consisting largely of technical leaves for engineers and scientists. In 1921, shortly after this discovery, a London based company was formed to market personal organisation systems in the UK by mail order. In 1930 they registered the trademark "Filofax", the name having derived from the description "file of facts".

See the Filofax Tips, here is one:

We recommend that you use a pencil when writing in your Filofax as it can be easily changed. A highlighter can be used to block fixed times and holidays which have been confirmed.

The projection used for this world map, also known as the "Dymaxion Map," was created by Buckminster Fuller, distinguished mathematician, inventor and 20th century visionary. The map began as a sketch, "The One-Town World" in 1927. By 1954, after working on the map for several decades, Fuller finally had a satisfactory deck plan of the six and one half sextillion tons Spaceship Earth.

The Dymaxion Map is the only flat map of the entire surface of the earth that reveals our planet as it really is an island in one ocean without any visible distortion of the relative shapes and sizes of the land areas, and without splitting any continents.

[…]

All flat world map representations of the spherical globe contain some amount of distortion either in shape, area, distance or direction measurements. On the well-known Mercator world map, Greenland appears to be three times its relative globe size and Antarctica appears as a long thin white strip along the bottom edge of the map. Even the popular Robinson Projection, now used in many schools, still contains a large amount of area distortion with Greenland appearing 60 percent larger than its relative globe size.

The Delta Capsule is a must-have and a must-give; also, it is made of type III hard anodized aluminum, which we adore.

It’s a waterproof, modular aluminum capsule with a separate, glowing compartment and a removable impact cap. It features a built-in high decibel signal whistle in the pocket clip end cap.

The Capsule is not intended to replace the (in)famous Altoids Mint Tin but if you have or want one, you definitely crave the other one.

For some it’s the status of their portfolio, or the health of an aging parent. Others want to know if their friends are online, the upcoming weather, the score of a game, if the fish are biting, or if there’s heavy traffic on their drive home. These are examples of information that is neither worthy of interrupt (push), nor worthy of investing time (pull). This type of information should be glanceable, like a clock or barometer. We call this ambient information.

Look at the furniture in your office, at home… now imagine if everything had a level of extra information to it. Here is a game for the holiday season: whereever you are invited, check the house and all the settings and colors for that hidden info. Be aware of walls changing their color, try to affect the displays, if it works you have proof that they are monitoring… You.

Here are the gifts you are looking for —

Ambient Orb

Frosted glass orb glows a color to indicate your information.

The Ambient Orb slowly transitions between thousands of colors to show changes in the weather, the health of your stock portfolio, or if your boss or kid is on instant messenger.

Ambient Wheather Forecast Beacon

Know what to wear today, if it’ll rain this weekend, or virtually any weather information, all in a calm glanceable display of color.

The Beacon silently and elegantly communicates weather data using color and light. It glows more red when warmer weather is forecasted, and colder blue hues if cooler temperatures are on the way. The Beacon will also subtly pulse to show the chance of rain or snow.

Even more: FAQ and Fansite
